Media Advisory

WHAT: New York Jets veteran Marty Lyons will be the featured speaker at the second annual Diocese of Rockville Centre Respect Life Youth Speaker Tour. Marty will visit McGann-Mercy High School, Riverhead, Our Lady of Mercy Academy, Syosset and St. Dominic’s High School, Oyster Bay. Each year the Respect Life office selects an inspirational public figure who can communicate to high school students how he or she incorporates their Catholic faith into their public life. Marty Lyons, part of the “New York Sack Exchange” during his twelve-year career with the Jets, is a man who epitomized professionalism, dignity and the spirit of giving. Early in his career, Marty befriended and became a surrogate father to a young boy suffering an advanced illness. Three years later, in the spring of 1982, the youngster’s death coincided with the sudden death of Marty’s father and the birth of his first child, a healthy son. These experiences profoundly affected Marty’s attitude toward life, fame and his fellow human beings. With the encouragement and assistance of family and friends, Marty Lyons become determined to establish a foundation dedicated to granting wishes of seriously ill children.
