Diocese of Rockville Centre

by Steven Lopez

On the eve of the Joplin mission, I find myself extremely grateful that this is about to be a reality for me. I can’t believe the huge amount of support that came from my family, Hofstra and countless others.  This is my first mission trip with Hofstra and Family Missions, so I’m not sure what to expect, but I know this is where I’m supposed to be. God has such a mysterious way of steering me in the direction of the road I have to be on. If it wasn’t for the amazing trip to D.C. for the March for Life and the recent retreat I was on, I don’t know if my heart would be on fire as much as it is right now.  God was pretty much slapping me in the face with all the hints he gave me about going on this mission. And with Easter behind us, it gave me some time to reflect on the other reasons I’m doing this.

I went to Hartford last weekend to see a wonderful done production of the Passion of the King. I’ve seen passion plays before, but this one in particular had me kneeling at his feet ready to give him my soul at that very moment, but I know that’s not what Jesus wants from me right now. He wants me to spread his message of forgiveness and unity under the Eucharist. When the opportunity to join this mission team presented itself, I knew I had to do it, not for me, but for Him and the people of Joplin who need as much help as possible. I feel so reinvigorated and ready for this mission spiritually and physically (because I know there is going to be much labor involved). Thanks to Bridget, Rosie and Family missions for giving me an opportunity to spread my wings and find my way into God’s good graces. Lastly, I’d like to say how thankful I am that this could happen during my senior year of college, and on the week after Easter. How appropriate this occasion is. I’d like to leave you with a quote as a reminder of why we do the work we do here on this Earth. Let this evangelize the masses.

"Whatsoever ye do, work heartily, as unto the Lord, and not unto men." - Colossians 3:23
