When was the last time you were exhausted?  Completely, entirely, fall-on-your-face, barely-able-to-take-the-next-step exhausted?  Often when this happens we get discouraged with ourselves – we have come to the end of our rope.  But as a wise friend once reminded me, God HAS no end to HIS rope!

Mother Teresa certainly dealt with exhaustion, on both spiritual and physical planes.  She had long days of difficult work, many sleepless nights, and a spiritual darkness which she could not decipher.  Still, she kept on because of her faith, her belief that God was ultimately in control.  She trusted Him to give her the strength to continue.  “Do not think that love, in order to be genuine, has to be extraordinary”, Mother Teresa tells us.  “What we need is to love without getting tired.  Be faithful in small things, because it is in them that your strength lies.”

It is being faithful which enables us to put one foot in front of another when we are weary, to keep going when things look hopeless.  Be faithful in prayer, even when the Spirit must pray for you.  Be faithful in love, even when you believe it doesn't exist anymore.  Be faithful in hope, because as Scripture tells us:  "Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful."  (Hebrews 10:23)

The next time you feel exhausted, and think you are ready to collapse, do what Mother Teresa would do:  collapse in prayer.

Bl. Mother Teresa, pray for us!
