Life doesn't always make sense.  So often we are faced with situations where we try our best to live according to "the rules" and still things go wrong.  Recently in Tucson we were faced with such an event - lives destroyed and changed forever, lives that held hope and beauty and goodness.  Where is God in all of that, we ask?

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton was able to face all the contradictions of her life:  the loss of her young husband and two of her children, isolation from family and friends, the descent into poverty and uncertainty of the future.  She knew where her God was through it all - He was beside her, giving her hope, comfort and strength to go on.  She wrote, "And in every disappointment, great or small, let your dear heart fly directly to Him, your Savior, throwing yourself into His arms for refuge against every pain and sorrow.  He will never leave you nor forsake you."

She held the firm conviction that "He is with me, and what can I fear?...I look neither behind nor before, only up."  When contradictions arose she did not dwell on the past nor worry about the future; she had complete confidence that God was aware of every tear, every heartache, every question.  Her soul was held captive in the love of Christ.

When our world seems to spin out of control, we can be sure that Mother Seton understands.  Let us repeat the prayers she offered up:  "Thy will be done.  What a comfort those four little words are to my soul.  I have repeated them until they are softened to the sweetest harmony.  We are in darkness, and must be thankful that our knowledge is not needed to perfect Thy work...Oh, my heavenly Father, I know that these contradicting events are permitted and guided by Thy wisdom, which alone is light."  Amen.

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, pray for us!
