"Your Communions were very cold:  you paid little attention to the Lord; you were distracted by the smallest trifle.  But ever since you began to realize during an intimate dialogue with God that the angels are present, your attitude has changed.  You say to yourself:  'Let them not see me like this.'  And see how, as a result of thinking 'What will they say?' - this time, for a good motive, you have advanced a little towards Love." (St. Josemaria Escrivá)

angels_gather.jpgHow well do we recognize the Sacred when it comes to us in Holy Communion?  Do we look with eyes of faith to see myriads of angels gathered around the altar? Do we sense the presence of the Divine?  Or do we, too, get distracted by the littlest thing?

St. Josemaria Escrivá reminds us that we are in the company of saints and angels, and like them our concentration should be focused on Christ.  St. Augustine agrees: "The angels surround the priest; the whole sanctuary and the space before the altar is filled with the heavenly powers who come to honor Him Who is present upon the altar....Behold the royal table. The angels serve at it."  (St Augustine, "The Priesthood")  If distractions plague us we can surely ask for their help in overcoming them.  We can take whatever crosses our minds and place it in their hands, offering it up as a sacrifice - in this way we can give all our thoughts to God.

The next time you are at Mass, use your spiritual eyes to see God's heavenly host gathered at the altar and praising God.  Recognize that you are on holy ground, and advance a little towards Love.

St. Josemaria Escrivá, pray for us!
