"O Sacred Heart of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, to you I consecrate and offer up my person and my life, my actions, trials and sufferings...This is my irrevocable will, to belong entirely to You and to do all for Your Love...O Heart of Love, I hope all from Your infinite goodness." (Prayer of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque)

St. Margaret Mary was a mystic, someone whose eyes are closed to the things of the world and open to the things of God.  She received several instructions from Christ on keeping devotions to the Sacred Heart, especially on the first Friday of each month.  She was to lay face down in front of the Blessed Sacrament from 11 p.m. to midnight on the eve of the first Friday, and receive Holy Communion on the day of.

First Friday devotions are a beautiful way to remember Christ, a time to set aside each month to pay a special tribute to His Sacred Heart.  The “heart” is a part of our physical being, and so it links Christ to us in his humanity.  He felt in his heart all the emotions that humans are capable of feeling.  The word “sacred” is the link to the divine, and carries with it the understanding of holiness and eternal life.  So devotion to the Sacred Heart is a precious means of melding the human and the holy in our own hearts.

There are many ways to keep first Fridays:  attending Mass, making a Holy Hour, stopping to say a small prayer at 3:00 p.m. (the hour which we mark as Christ’s crucifixion), saying an act of consecration to the Sacred Heart like the one above; these are just some of the ways to honor Him.  Today, which is the first Friday in August, take some time to welcome Christ’s love into your heart by devotion to His.

St. Margaret Mary, pray for us!
