This month we look at the life and spirituality of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, the “Beloved Disciple of the Sacred Heart”, who was born in 1647. (Read her bio at right.) A relic of hers will be venerated this month in our Diocese.

You might ask, how can we relate to someone born in the 1600’s? What relevance can it have for our lives today? But if we think about the Communion of Saints, the intimate bond between the Body of Christ, it surpasses time because it is based in eternity. If God is eternal, then all time is present to Him, and all who live in His presence are united in Him. So her spirituality, especially her devotion to the Sacred Heart of Christ, can come alive for us today.

Of her vision of the Sacred Heart she wrote: “This divine heart is an abyss filled with all blessings, and into which the poor should submerge all their needs. It is an abyss of joy in which all of us can immerse our sorrows. It is an abyss of lowliness to counteract our foolishness, an abyss of mercy for the wretched, an abyss of love to meet our every need.” A beautiful thought which is more than mere sentiment, because Christ’s heart has a place for each of us, whatever our needs. We can come to Him as we are: needy, fearful, desperate for love, and He will be our strength and our haven. His heart is a resting place for us because it has felt the things our hearts feel in all of our humanity. And yet it also is divine, and so holds the promise of eternal love.

Today, in this summer month of re-creation, let us begin with a small prayer to be able to rest in the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Give your heart to His, where it will always be safe.

St. Margaret Mary, pray for us!
