“Great love can change small things into great ones, and it is only love which lends value to our actions.”    This statement of St. Maria Faustina’s is reminiscent of St. Paul’s thoughts on love in 1Corinthians 13:  without love we are nothing, we do nothing, and we gain nothing.  All our actions need to be based in love for them to have merit.

The love which they both speak of is never mere sentiment – it must bare itself as Christ did on the Cross.  It must be a love which is willing to sacrifice, willing to die to itself for others, a love which is truly self-giving and self-renouncing.  While this may sound idealistic, it is what we are called to as Christians, and it is what Christ modeled for us.

This is the only type of love which can change the world, which can, indeed, “change small things into great ones.”  For when we sacrifice for the sake of love we magnify the beauty and goodness of God.  If you have ever seen the sacrificial relationship between parent and child, which changes as the child grows and the parent ages, you have seen this love.  If you have seen the tenderness of a caretaker with a severely handicapped or terminally ill person, you have seen this love.  Small gestures, quiet moments, soft tears, all immense in the eyes of God.

Lord Jesus, may we each be unafraid to offer ourselves for others as You did.  May we find that the way to joyful union with You is through sacrificial love.  Amen...

St. Maria Faustina, pray for us!
