Padre Pio was known for being an extremely moral man.  He was modest and had a deep piety; he lived his Christian faith fully, and expected others to do the same.  Even when he was being investigated by the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith and had to curtail his priestly activities he did not lash out at his detractors or disobey, he quietly did as he was asked and let his faith speak for him.

Ron Roheiser, OMI, once wrote something which can be applied to Padre Pio's life, and hopefully our own:  "And there's the lesson:  We must do more than just point out the right road to others, we must be on that road ourselves.  For this reason, the integrity of our private lives and private morals, down to the smallest detail, is the real power behind our words."

Padre Pio passed that test - he truly lived what he preached.  Can we say the same?  We may speak eloquently or be a captivating writer, but do our actions back up our words?  As Fr. Rolheiser points out, that's where the real power lies.  Perhaps we can make an effort to look back on our year and see where we can improve our Christian walk.  Let's ask the Saints to point out to us the road they traveled, and follow in their footsteps.

St. Padre Pio, pray for us!
